Will Automation Replace Jobs? Port Workers May Strike Over It

Ports in the United States could see labor disruptions this summer as 22,000 dockworkers consider a strike over concerns that automation will replace longshore jobs.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union is negotiating a new contract with the Pacific Maritime Association. If the two parties cannot reach an agreement, the contract will expire on July 1, 2022, and workers will have the authority to strike.

The report found that jobs in transportation, manufacturing, and retail are at the highest risk of being automated.

However, the report also found that automation could create new jobs in other industries, such as healthcare and education.
